What are Wisdom Teeth and Why Might They Have to be Removed?

Located at the very back of the mouth, wisdom teeth are the last and final set of molars to emerge, typically appearing between the ages of 14 and 30. Some people never get their wisdom teeth. For many adults, wisdom teeth emerge and cause no issues at all. For others however, complications arise that require intervention. The most common reason for the removal of wisdom teeth is insufficient room in the jaw for wisdom teeth to emerge. Other times, it is other teeth that get in the way of the wisdom teeth, they emerge only partially or they emerge at an angle. Wisdom teeth that do not break through the gums are called ‘impacted.’ Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to infection and bacterial growth, accompanied by pain, swelling and discomfort. Impacted wisdom teeth may also affect adjacent second molars.

Regular dental monitoring can catch problems with your wisdom teeth early on so they can be dealt with proactively before they lead to discomfort or more severe complications. Good preventive care will save you unnecessary stress, pain and expense. Highwood Dental offers comprehensive wisdom teeth removal services to address all of our patient’s needs. Prior to any extraction, your dentist will conduct a careful examination, which includes x-rays, in order to determine the condition and position of the wisdom teeth so an appropriate treatment plan can be created. Whatever plan and technique is used, your safety and comfort are prioritized throughout the entire process, with options for local anesthesia and sedation available to help minimize discomfort and alleviate anxiety. Following your wisdom teeth extraction, your dental team will provide you with post-operative care to reduce the risk of any complications and support proper healing.

It is always best to be proactive when it comes to your oral health.
